The Medical School Application Landscape

Key Requirements

To be competitive for medicine, candidates typically must satisfy several rigorous criteria:

  • Academic excellence: Top A-level grades (often AAA or higher), usually including Chemistry and Biology (or equivalent)
  • Admissions test: Currently, UCAT is required by practically all UK medical schools; BMAT is discontinued as of 2024.
  • Relevant experience: Clinical, volunteering, or healthcare exposure; evidence of reflective learning from the experience
  • Personal statement: Insightful narrative demonstrating motivation, self-awareness, and understanding of medicine
  • Interviews: Many universities use Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), while others use traditional panel-style or hybrid formats
  • Personal qualities: Communication, empathy, resilience, teamwork, ethical reasoning, professionalism

Admissions Test: UCAT (formerly BMAT)

Why UCAT is Now Standard

The BMAT has been discontinued as of 2024. All universities that used BMAT have now shifted to UCAT.

For Oxford Medicine specifically, applicants from 2025 onward must take UCAT instead of BMAT. Oxford treats the cognitive subtests of UCAT in shortlisting; the Situational Judgement component is used later (or not at the shortlisting stage).

Cambridge likewise uses UCAT, assessing the cognitive (non-SJT) portion for standard entry (A100) applicants.

UCAT: Format & Timing

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Sections (from 2025 onward): Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Situational Judgement
  • Note: The Abstract Reasoning subtest has been removed in recent cycles
  • Registration and test window: typically July to September (e.g. 2025 window runs from July to 26 September)
  • Oxford's test registration: (for medical applicants) must be done by the UCAT deadline

Interview Formats

Medical school interviews vary significantly between institutions:

  • Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI): Structured stations testing different competencies
  • Panel interviews: More conversational and holistic; performance in one question can influence others
  • Hybrid formats: Combination of both approaches

Cambridge UCAT A*A*A (including Chemistry / equivalent) Panel / traditional
Imperial College UCAT AAA (with Chemistry & Biology) MMI
UCL UCAT A*AA (with Chemistry & Biology) MMI
King's College London UCAT A*AA (Chemistry & Biology) MMI

These are indicative, based on recent published entry standards; requirements may vary by year, route, or applicant cohort.

What Our Parents and Students Have to Say

"Once again, I would like to thank you most sincerely for all the support until how have made to my son. He has enjoyed working with you on the Maths and has made this clear. His experience with you has brought about a transformation in his attitude and approach to Maths. Well done!"

"Also thank you for recommending tutors for Biology and Chemistry. They have been great too!"

"James was such a great help with my Maths A level. He was patient and understanding and made working through the material we went over very asking interesting questions when we were going over topics I had found difficult in class and his explanations were always very thorough. I always walked away from our sessions much more confident about my Maths than before and occasionally having explored interesting material that went slightly beyond the specification."

"An outstanding tutor. Responsive, encouraging, supportive and kind. Thanks for all your help!"

"James is helping my son prepare for his STEP exams. According to my son, James has been teaching methods for solving problems in a similar way and standard to which they did on the Cambridge STEP day. James "knows his stuff", is friendly and teaches well. My son looks forward to the sessions, has advanced in his Maths and feels more confident afterwards."
